A National Call to End Child Hunger and Build a Healthier, Fairer Food Future for All
In one of the world’s wealthiest nations, it is unacceptable that over 4 million children face the daily threat of hunger. The UK Food Council today launches Feeding Britain: Hunger 2030, a landmark national initiative that brings together supermarkets, food producers, farmers, schools, and local authorities to end food poverty by the end of the decade.
The initiative begins by supporting free school breakfasts - already being provided in over 750 schools across the country—and scales up through coordinated, practical, and political action designed to address hunger at its root.
Feeding Britain: Food2030 will serve as both an advocacy campaign and an operational platform, incorporating:
Community Advocacy and Education – Delivering healthy diet learning programmes that empower families with the knowledge and confidence to choose, obtain, and prepare nutritious meals.
Grow-Your-Own Food Initiatives – Partnering with local authorities to release underused land for community allotments, allowing people to grow, share, and enjoy fresh produce while fostering community pride.
Food Redistribution – Expanding the redistribution of surplus food from retailers, wholesalers, and producers to those who need it most.
Corporate and Political Engagement – Building a cross-sector coalition to lobby Parliament and the governing political party for policies that protect food security, support vulnerable families, and eliminate structural barriers to change.
Bridging the divide
The campaign will also act as a bridge between farming communities and government, aiming to re-open long-stalled discussions on rural support, including pressing matters such as capital gains tax reform. Farmers are recognised as essential to both food production and community health, and their inclusion is central to Food2030’s success.
A rallying call to all
“No child in Britain should be going to school hungry in 2025 - let alone 2030. Our food systems, farmers, and retailers are among the best in the world. Hunger 2030 asks them to come together to create a legacy we can all be proud of,” said Ray Smith, Chair, UK Food Council
Delivering on the vision
To deliver on its vision, Feeding Britain: Food2030 will seek dependable funding from a wide range of sources, combining traditional campaigning and public fundraising with meaningful partnerships across the food sector, retail, and government. The initiative will operate at local, regional, and national levels, ensuring both immediate impact and long-term change.
