Nestlé issues precautionary recall of selected infant formula batches in the UK and across parts of Europe

Nestlé has confirmed a voluntary, precautionary recall covering specific batches of its infant formula products in the UK and several European markets. The recall is linked to a potential food safety risk associated with cereulide (a toxin sometimes linked to Bacillus cereus).

The UK’s food safety guidance notes that cereulide can cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps and is highly heat-resistant, meaning normal preparation methods will not neutralise it.

What’s affected (UK)

In the UK, the recall notice relates to named infant formula and follow-on products under the SMA brand, with consumers advised to check batch codeson-pack. Nestlé states that other batches and other Nestlé products are not included in this recall.

Wider Europe context

Across mainland Europe, Nestlé has issued additional, country-specific recall notices affecting certain infant nutrition products in those markets.

What parents and caregivers should do

  • Do not use any product that matches the affected batch codes.

  • Follow the returns/refund instructions provided in the recall notice and by the retailer.

  • If you have concerns about a baby’s health, seek medical advice.

UK Food Council note

Infant nutrition sits at the highest level of food safety sensitivity. This recall underlines the importance of supplier assurance, ingredient traceability, rapid escalation protocols, and clear recall communications across the entire supply chain.
