Economist Impact – Future of FoodSummit | Strategic Context for UK Food Council Members

The UK Food Council is supporting Economist Impact’s Future of Food summit as part of its wider role in convening evidence-led debate on the structural challenges facing the UK and global food system.

This briefing outlines why the event matters to UK Food Council members, what strategic signals to watch for, and how members can engage.

Why This Event Matters to UK Food Leaders

Global food systems are entering a period of persistent instability rather than cyclical disruption. According to the United Nations, more than 673 million people globally face food insecurity, driven by the convergence of climate stress, conflict, trade disruption and economic volatility.

For UK food businesses, this translates into:

  • Heightened supply chain risk and volatility

  • Greater regulatory and policy intervention

  • Increased scrutiny on pricing, margins and affordability

  • Accelerating pressure to demonstrate sustainability and resilience

  • Growing divergence between short-term operational pressures and long-term system reform

The Future of Foodsummit provides a rare, high-level forum where these issues are discussed across policy, capital, technology and industry leadership simultaneously.

Key Strategic Themes to Watch

Members attending — or tracking outcomes — should pay particular attention to:

1. Food Security as a Systemic Risk
Food security is increasingly framed alongside energy and defence as a strategic national concern. Expect stronger signals around state involvement, intervention and coordination.

2. Climate Volatility and Production Resilience
Discussions will move beyond net-zero commitments toward adaptation, yield resilience and risk-managed production models.

3. Supply Chain Transparency and Accountability
Pressure is building for clearer traceability, data integrity and shared responsibility across complex global supply networks.

4. Affordability vs Sustainability Tension
A recurring challenge: how governments and industry balance consumer affordability with environmental and social obligations.

5. Technology as Enabler, Not Cure-All
AI, data platforms and alternative inputs will be positioned as tools — not substitutes — for governance, policy alignment and investment discipline.
