As Chief Economist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Máximo Torero plays a pivotal role in shaping the global response to food insecurity, supply-chain disruption and climate-driven agricultural risk.

At FAO, Torero leads the organisation’s economic analysis and policy engagement, providing governments, multilateral institutions and industry stakeholders with evidence-based insight to build resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems. His work spans food price volatility, access to affordable and nutritious diets, global trade flows, and the financing mechanisms required to support agricultural transformation at scale.

A recognised authority on food system shock resilience, Torero has been instrumental in guiding international responses to recent crises, including pandemic-related disruption, geopolitical conflict and climate-linked supply instability. He also serves as FAO’s analytical voice in high-level international forums, helping to shape the global dialogue on food security, nutrition and sustainable production.
